Life Transitions

Life Transitions Therapy in New York and New Jersey

Change, even when it is wanted, can leave you feeling unsteady. Therapy can help you make sense of what is shifting and move forward with clarity. I work with adults by secure video across New York and New Jersey.

Transitions That Bring People to Therapy

  • Career changes, job loss or returning to work
  • Moving to a new city or country, or adjusting to a new culture
  • Relationship changes, including separation or divorce
  • Grief and the loss of someone close to you
  • Becoming a caregiver for a parent or partner
  • Retirement, an empty nest or other later-life changes
  • Health changes that affect your routine or sense of self

You might feel anxious, sad, lost or simply unsure who you are in this new chapter. All of these are common responses to change.

Even positive changes, like a promotion, a new relationship or a long-awaited move, can bring stress and unexpected feelings of loss. There is no wrong way to feel about a transition, and you do not have to sort it out alone.

How Therapy Helps During Change

Therapy gives you space to pause and reflect. Together we look at what you are leaving behind, what you want next, and what is getting in the way.

I use a strength-based, person-centered approach, drawing on CBT, mindfulness and positive psychology to help you build resilience and make decisions with more confidence.

Transitions can shake your sense of identity. When a role that defined you changes, therapy can help you reconnect with your values and strengths and decide who you want to be next.

We also make room for the feelings that come with change, including grief for what is ending, fear of the unknown, and sometimes excitement that feels hard to trust.

Grief and Loss

Some transitions come from loss, such as the death of someone close, the end of a relationship, or saying goodbye to a job, home or version of yourself. Grief can show up as sadness, anger, numbness or exhaustion, and it rarely follows a straight line.

Therapy offers a place to honor what you have lost and to find ways of carrying it forward. We move at your pace, without pressure to "move on" before you are ready.

What to Expect

We begin by talking about what is changing and how it is affecting you. We look at your strengths, your supports, and the parts of the transition that feel hardest.

Along the way, we may work on practical skills, such as managing stress, setting boundaries, communicating needs to the people around you, and building routines that support you.

Some people come for a focused stretch of sessions while they navigate a specific change. Others continue longer as the transition unfolds. Either way, we set goals together and revisit them as your situation evolves.

When a Transition Stirs Up the Past

Sometimes a change reopens older experiences, such as earlier losses or long-held fears about failing or being alone. When that happens, EMDR therapy can help process what is resurfacing so it does not shape the next chapter.

Start with a Free Consultation, in English or Polish

Sessions take place by secure, HIPAA-compliant video, or phone if needed, for adults located in New York or New Jersey, which can be especially useful when your schedule or location is changing. In-person sessions in Montclair, NJ are available on request.

I also work in Polish, which many clients find helpful when a move or cultural change is part of the transition. Read more on my Polish-language page.

If you are in the middle of a change and want support, a free 15-minute consultation is a good place to start. Reach out here.

Common Questions

Do I need to be struggling a lot to seek therapy for a transition?

No. Many people come to therapy to navigate a change thoughtfully, not only when things feel overwhelming.

Can therapy help me make a big decision?

Therapy will not make the decision for you, but it can help you clarify your values, understand your fears and feel more confident in your choice.

Do you work with older adults?

Yes. I work with adults of all ages, including older adults facing retirement, caregiving, health changes or loss.

Can I keep doing therapy if I am moving?

Yes, as long as you are located in New York or New Jersey at the time of each session. Video sessions can provide steady continuity while your home, schedule or daily routine is changing around you.

Is grief a reason to start therapy?

Yes. Grief is a natural response to loss, and you do not need to be "stuck" to benefit from support. Therapy can give you a steady place to process your loss, especially when the people around you are grieving too or expect you to move on quickly.
